I’d escaped both these fiery furnaces by working as a dogsbody at the Co-op department store humping brand new Schreiber, Ercol and G Plan furniture before they became antiques. I chose a gig with Freddie and The Dreamers in Stoke instead of Co-op overtime which took me to a John Collier menswear shop; barman at a holiday camp; delivery driver of wines and spirits; sales rep. for a pharmaceutical company; assistant stage manager at a local theatre; ambulance driver and culminating in a dream job on board a cruise liner in the Mediterranean.One would have thought so many years of experience, in all walks of life, would have proved ample to equip myself for the seemingly simple ‘promised’ task of being a Carer. How naïve of me, I couldn’t have been more wrong. No amount of pre-thought and planning prepares you for the journey you, and your loved one, are about to embark upon. Alzheimer’s disease comes at you fast and furious out of a blue sky with the sun at its back.From the first episode with the chimney pots, mum and I had a roller-coaster ride of events, some heart-breaking, some funny: the stress of caring at home; learning to live without sleep; going walkabout; locking me out of the house; learning the language of Alzheimeze; hospital calamities; respite care accidents; the Day Care Centre; help, or, rather the lack of it, ……recording hours of events on my trusted hi8 camcorder. This is a unique insight into a private world of dementia and how it affects everyone around it.
